What is MRI and How does it work?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a painless exam that produces 2 and 3 dimensional images of the inside of the body without using x-rays. The MRI equipment consists of a very strong magnetic field, radio frequency waves and a computer to produce the digital images. The image detail acheived often provides physicians with the ablilty to diagnose a variety of health problems at their earliest, most treatable stages.
What would you expect when having an MRI?
The MRI technologist will have you lie down on a comfortable table that slides into posotion in the scanner. In order to obtain the best images it is important that you remain as still as possible once the scan begins. Images are acquired in sequences over a period of time. The technologist determines the location of the images from the first sequence that is taken. Any movement between sequences will mean the images are not taken in the proper area. If you move during the sequence all the images acquired will have motion and the sequence will have to be repeated. The machine makes a very loud knocking and humming noise while acquiring the images. Anyone in the scan room during the exam is required to wear hearing protection. You may wish to bring a CD to listen to during the exam.
The entire MRI exam will take 30-90 minutes. During this time you will remain in the scanner while the technologist will be able to see and communicate with you throuhgout the exam. When the exam is completed, you can immediately resume your normal activities.
